Choosing storage
Fast SSDs for the system and apps, large hard drives for backups and archives - and always check which slot or port you have.
NVMe or SATA
NVMe SSDs in an M.2 slot are several times faster than 2.5-inch SATA SSDs. Check whether your M.2 slot supports NVMe, as some older laptops only take SATA M.2.
Hard drives
For backups, media libraries and CCTV, a hard drive gives far more space per dollar than an SSD.
External and portable
A portable SSD is faster and tougher than a portable hard drive. Use the fastest USB port you have - USB 3.2 or USB-C.
Common questions about storage
Will a Gen4 NVMe SSD work in a Gen3 slot?
Yes, NVMe is backwards compatible - it simply runs at Gen3 speed.
Which SSD works in a PS5?
A PCIe Gen4 M.2 NVMe SSD rated at 5,500 MB/s or faster, ideally with a heatsink.
